Since the 1980s, multi-jackbolt tensioners (MJTs)
have found widespread use on turbines, pumps, heat
exchangers, piping, valves, reactor vessels and compressors.
Their reliability in service, ease of application (versus
other means) and relative low cost account for an increasing
popularity.
At first glance, MJTs may not always seem the
cheaper alternative. On both new equipment and retrofits
where cost of materials takes priority, these hexnut
replacements typically cost more than standard nuts and bolts
- up to a point. As size increases, the difference tends to
