Chlorine is the most commonly used chemical for microbiological control in open cooling water systems. Typically, bromine is applied in small cooling towers and systems with alkaline water. These two oxidizing biocides are very effective against sessile organisms (floating organisms) and their usage cost is low. However, they have several important limitations such as: Cannot penetrate slime masses Corrode copper, mild steel, galvanized materials and even stainless steel at high concentrations.
