Recent environmental restrictions on the usage of chlorine and new alkaline-based chemical treatment programs have increased the application of bromine-based biocides in industrial cooling systems. For effective microbiological control, bromine is always fed with chlorine, either as two separate products or synthesized as a bromo-chloro-compound. Hypochlorous acid is required to oxidize the sodium bromide component and form the biocidal species hypobromous acid (HOBr).
Several commercially available forms of bromine are: bromine chloride (BrCl), bromine gas, 1-bromo-3-chloro-5,5-dimethylhydantoin (BCDMH), other brominated hydantoins, sodium bromide (NaBr) or isocyanurate/ sodium bro
