Industrial users are a driving force in demanding standards and openness. Competition is forcing business to find ways to improve productivity. A result is that businesses are calling for standards, open systems, interchangeability and interoperability of systems (hardware, software, applications). Committees creating new standards seem to be appearing everywhere. Users hope that imposing hardware and software standards will increase productivity by improving interoperability and interchangeability. The result is expected to be increased productivity and profitability due to more easily interconnected systems and the ability to use the best-of-breed components in their system
