Total global naphtha consumption in 1997 was 666 million tons. About 40% of this was consumed for petrochemical production, either as olefin plant feedstock or reformer feedstock for aromatics production.
Global naphtha demand is anticipated to increase at an annual average growth rate of 2.8% through 2005, says a new report from Chem Systems. Growth is projected to be strongest for petrochemicals, which will represent a larger share of total consumption 47% by 2005.
Demand for petrochemicals will grow faster than demand for refined products, on average 5 to 6%/yr through 2005 vs. 2%/yr for gasoline Table 1.
