MAN Diesel & Turbo and Hyundai Engineering (HEC) have completed the extension of a power plant in Pakistan for Attock Refinery Ltd. (ARL). The plant, located northeast of Rāwalpindi, is powered by heavy fuel oil (HFO) and supplies electricity to a refinery.

Three MAN 14V32/40 gensets generate 18 MW of electrical power for the processes in the refinery plant. This equates to the electricity demand of approximately 30,000 households. Hyundai, as an EPC service provider, was responsible for the construction of the plant whilst MAN took over the design and delivery of the engines and accessories, as well as the training of the operating personnel.

Rāwalpindi is situated in the Punjab region, only a few kilometers southwest of the capital city, Islamabad. Together, the two cities comprise one of the country’s largest industrial centers. Also located in Rāwalpindi, are the headquarters of the Attock group, one of the most important businesses within the oil and gas industry in Pakistan.

“With an installed capacity of more than 700 MW, Pakistan is an important power plant market for us,” said Alexander Stöckler, Senior Vice President and global head of sales for the power plants sector at MAN Diesel & Turbo. “We are experienced and established both in the ‘Captive Power’ applications sector – as here for the customer ARL – and in public power supply and the operation of power plants.”
