Amec Foster Wheeler has been awarded a contract by The National Company for Fertilizers & Chemicals (Agrochem) to supply material and detailed engineering for a steam reformer heater for its fertilizer facility in Alexandria, Egypt.

The steam reformer heater, based on Amec Foster Wheeler's Terrace Wall design, will operate as the primary reformer in the 250 tpd ammonia production unit. This will allow Agrochem to have the complete production line within its facility without any external sourcing of ammonia, a key component in the production of fertilizer.

Agrochem is a new customer for Amec Foster Wheeler. The scope of work is scheduled for completion at the end of 2016.

Amec Foster Wheeler acts as a designer and supplier of the heart of the hydrogen production unit: the steam reformer heater. The steam reformer heater, Amec Foster Wheeler's Terrace Wall type, is characterized by a specific firing arrangement and sloped-wall radiant section design that, together, optimise the heat flux distribution towards catalyst tubes enabling long catalyst tube life (often in excess of 100,000 hours) and delivering the flexibility to extend a reformer's operating envelope. This often allows production of hydrogen in excess of the design capacity of the hydrogen production unit, which may in turn deliver additional economic benefits. Amec Foster Wheeler's reformers can operate with ultra-low-NOx burners to meet tightening environmental emission standards worldwide.
