BP said Tuesday the contaminated gasoline from its refinery in Whiting, Ind., should have reached no further than the northwest part of the state.
BP issued a recall late Monday for the unleaded regular gasoline shipped from Whiting between Aug. 13 and 17, saying it could cause hard starting, stalling and other drivability issues.
The fuel would have been sold to motorists at various gas stations, not just BP-branded outlets, a company spokesman said.
BP is reviewing shipping records and contacting customers who may have loaded tanker trucks at the Whiting storage facility.
BP doesnt yet know how many barrels of the contaminated gasoline were sold or what caused the contamination, the BP spokesman said.
