Western Refining settles N.M. emissions violations

By BEN LEFEBVRE

Western Refining agreed to pay $444,000 in a settlement with the New Mexico Environment Department to resolve air emissions violations at its refinery in the state, the regulating body said Friday.

The settlement stems from excess sulfur dioxide, nitrogen oxides and other pollutants emitted by Western's refinery in Gallup, New Mexico, between July 2009 and March 2012.

In addition to the monetary fines, Western agreed to upgrade equipment at the 20,800 bpd refinery to lower emission levels, the New Mexico Environment Department said.

A Western Refining spokesman wasn't immediately available.
