Sasol plans gas-to-liquids complex in Louisiana
South Africa-based energy and chemicals group Sasol will execute a feasibility study on a proposed gas-to-liquids (GTL) facility in southwest Louisiana.
The project is slated to be the first plant in the US to produce GTL transportation fuels and other products, the company said.
We believe Sasols proprietary GTL technology can help unlock the potential of Louisianas clean and abundant natural gas resources and contribute to an affordable, reliable and high quality fuel supply for the United States, said Ernst Oberholster, Sasols managing director of new business development.
GTL fuels are an important part of the energy mix because they can advance energy independence in a way that is both cost-efficient and environmentally friendly, he added.
In addition, unlike other proposed alternatives to conventional petroleum-based fuels, GTL fuel is used in existing vehicles and fuel delivery infrastructure without modifications, the company said.
The study will evaluate the viability of a GTL venture in Calcasieu Parish, Louisiana, over the next 18 months.
The feasibility study will consider two options of a 2 million tpy and a 4 million tpy facility.
It is the second such groundbreaking project that Sasol is planning in the southwest Louisiana region. Last December, Sasol announced the worlds first ethylene tetramerization unit, also to be built in Calcasieu Parish.
