Former US House speaker proposes eliminating EPA
Former US House Speaker Newt Gingrich is an advocate for the elimination of the US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA). He unveiled this position in public for the first time during a speech at a conference in Washington, DC. One of his points of contention is that the EPA is “top down” and “bureaucratic.”
The Washington Post reported his remarks in this manner:
"It's time we passed an aggressively pro-American energy policy," said Gingrich to a crowded room of conservative activists who greeted his proposals warmly if not with great fervor. "What you have from Obama Administration is a war against American energy."
The EPA is also under fire from Republicans in the US House of Representatives. USA Today reports that on Wednesday, the House appropriations' leader proposed slicing more than $1.6 billion from Obama's $10 billion EPA budget request this year. Targeted programs deal with air pollution, drinking water, energy efficiency, renewable energy and Energy Star products.
In a final bit of EPA related news, EPA Adminstrator Lisa Jackson appeared before the House Energy and Commerce Committee’s Subcommittee on Energy and Power. Ms. Jackson was speaking in regard to the draft of a bill that would modify parts of the Clean Air Act. You can read her remarks here.
