Mewah Group invests in Malaysian palm oil refinery

Mewah Group is investing RM150 million to set up a 900,000 metric tpy palm oil refinery in Lahad Datu, Malaysia.  The refinery, which will begin with an initial capacity of 500,000 metric tons, will be one of the biggest in this part of Malaysia, where there are currently 10 refineries clustered in different sections of this area.  The refinery is expected to create about 200 jobs.

There is one other palm oil refinery already being established at this location.  It belongs to Zurex Corp. and will be producing 200,000 tpy when it starts operation in 2012.  What makes these refineries unique is that the owners do not own oil palm plantations, and are granted refinery licenses by federal authorities to operate exclusively in Lahad Datu.

The Lahad Datu location is heralded by local developers and businessmen for its close proximity to raw materials, a liquid oil jetty and a harbor capable of accommodating vessels up to 100,000 deadweight tons.
