As demand for oil products increases, refiners are expanding the capacity of their crude processing facilities to accommodate higher throughput. A considerable shift is noticed in countries where indigenous crude production is decreasing, requiring the import and processing of high-sulfur crude. To facilitate this change, revamps can be made to auxiliary process units, such as the sour water stripper (SWS) and the amine treating unit (ATU). As these units are not the profit-earning units in a refinery and work space within a refinery is constrained, refiners often seek cost-effective revamps of these auxiliary units rather than investing in a new unit.
