I recently rediscovered a curious phenomenon that
affects SIS shutdown settings: trip points. This malady is
particularly problematic for flow measurements in plants that
have gone through several capacity-increasing revamps. The
biggest source of concern for the HPI is that no overt
symptoms indicate that the condition exists.
I have decided to call the condition that I am
describing "trip point negative creep" (TPNC). Strangely
enough, TPNC occurs when shutdown settings, in engineering
units, stay the same during one or more capacity upgrades.
