For ammonia plants, a vital goal is extending time between turnarounds. Currently, runtimes range from one to four years. Yet, ammonia facilities have several waterside issues that can limit runtimes or cause unplanned shutdowns. They include corrosion and deposition in bayonet and scabbard waste-heat boilers, corrosion in the high-pressure reformer waste-heat boiler (Kellogg designation, 101-C) and cooling water deposition and microbiological fouling in heat exchangers.
