ECC Association Spring 2019 Sponsor Only Session
The Engineering and Construction Contracting (ECC) Association hosted the Spring 2019 Sponsor Only Session in March in Houston, Texas. Industry professionals ranging from owners, contractors and suppliers met in preparations for the annual ECC Conference.
The Sponsor Only Session, “Driving Towards an Aligned Business Model,” echoed the overall 2019 conference theme, “Win Together to Share Success NOW!” Moderated by ECC Executive Board Member, Tony Bazzini, ExxonMobil, participants were given an update on the current state of capital projects and introduced to the Construction Industry Institute (CII) and the Construction Users Roundtable (CURT) Operating System 2 (OS2) Initiative.
Pete Dumont, CURT President and Stephen Mulva, CII Executive Director presented on the OS2 initiative, which is an industry-wide research-supported solution that aims to create a standardized and transparent platform to make future capital projects more financially viable and sustainable.
The forum encouraged insight into other participants’ viewpoints through group dialogue and breakout sessions. Discussions included identifying waste in the current business model, reactions to the OS2 initiative and responses to the new model and platform. Groups explored strategies to promote an aligned business model and collaborated on what an idealized operating state may look like.
Overall, the group fully agreed on the need to improve capital project outcomes. The responses to the OS2 initiative and platform were generally optimistic, but also included a healthy degree of skepticism on how quickly the industry will be able to adopt such major changes from today’s practices. Toward the end of the session, the participants also began discussing what components of the OS2 initiative could and should be implemented in the near-term, including greater owner-contractor collaboration, decentralized decision-making, and increased use of standardization.
The results of the session will be further explored at the August 2019 ECC Conference in Colorado Springs.
