ECC '17: Lifetime Achievement and Spirit of ECC Awards
The ECC Association chose Jacqueline Hinman, CEO of CH2M, as its 2017 recipient of the Lifetime Achievement Award.
Her accomplishments are considerable. Hinman was appointed to the board of CH2M Hill Companies Ltd. in 2008. From 2007 until 2011, she served in multiple Executive Roles for CH2M.
Beginning in 2011, Hinman served as President of the International Division of CH2M Hill, and oversaw the acquisition of UK-based Halcrow Group, where she served as Chairman and CEO until its integration.
Under her leadership, CH2M has been recognized among the world's top engineering firms in annual industry rankings in Engineering News-Record and listed among the Ethisphere Institute's "World's most ethical companies" for nine consecutive years.
She also heads the infrastructure committee at Business Roundtable: Chief Executives of leading US companies. The well-crafted video featured several women who have Jackie as a mentor, reading letters they had written with accolades and vignettes.
This year's Spirit of ECC Award went to the team that produced the prize-winning documentary IMAX video "Dream Big: Engineering Our World" for the American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE). This movie also won the National Geographic 2016 Film of the Year award
The Macgillvray and Freeman team showed a video of how the documentary was conceived, developed and produced. The video encourages children to "dream big" by showing other kids in classes around the world building projects from instructional packets developed by the Dream Big project.
The "Dream Big Educator Guide" is a companion resource to the film. It includes multidisciplinary activities for students in grades K–12 and has been written to meet Next Generation Science Standards (NGSS), as well as common state science objectives.
Each lesson presents students with an engineering challenge inspired by the work of real engineers, and can be used to help introduce the engineering mindset to classrooms or homes.
Dream Big is an asset to educators everywhere, and can be seen at IMAX theaters now.
