Access Hydrocarbon Processing’s IRPC Operations virtual event! In Session 42: Maintenance and Reliability, Rodrigo Cardoso, Manager—P Development, CITGO Petroleum Corp., and Henry Kister, Director of Fractionation Technology, Fluor, presented a session titled, “Refinery tower inspections: Discovering problems and preventing malfunctions,” followed by a Q&A session with the audience.
The speakers presented a general theme of, “With towers, you get what you inspect, not always what you expect.” They reviewed general tower malfunctions (poor separation, instability, lost capacity, higher energy consumption, etc.), and stressed that proper inspection following construction and turnarounds is key to avoid malfunctions. They also presented case histories where inspection and turnaround testing identified bottlenecks, as well as a simple low-cost solution that prevented a major malfunction.
