IRPC Operations: Dynamic load case for coke drum foundation bolt design
9/21/2021
Access Hydrocarbon Processing’s IRPC Operations virtual event! In Session 22: Maintenance and Reliability, John Tharakan, Advisor Engineering-Static, Suncor Energy, presented a session titled, “Dynamic load case for coke drum foundation bolt design,” followed by a Q&A session with the audience.
Tharakan presented a case study on four identical 30 ft-diameter coke drums, and explored the lack of understanding of the magnitude and direction of dynamic loads and why foundation bolts should be designed to match these loads. He also explored approaches used by coke drum designers, including arbitrarily “beefing up” anchor bolts, using slotted bolt holes (to accommodate horizontal loads), and the use of Belleville washers to allow vertical movement without over-stressing the bolts.
The presentation is based on an article published in the September 2016 issue of Hydrocarbon Processing that comprises an estimation of horizontal dynamic loads on coke drums.
